What the show is

The production is LAStheatre’s stage version of The Littlest Yak, the picture book by Lu Fraser and Kate Hindley. The show’s artwork credits the book and lyrics to Barra Collins and the music to Joseph Hardy, and both the artwork and the theatre’s listing say it was nominated for four OffWestEnd awards.

The story follows Gertie, a young yak in the Himalayas. In the words of the tour’s press release, Gertie “is great at being THE LITTLEST YAK, with the CURLIEST, WHIRLIEST wool and the GRIPPIEST of hooves for clip-clopping up cliffs. Only, Gertie doesn’t want to be the littlest. She’s in a rush to grow up and be just like THE BIG YAKS. But what if there are some things that only a GERTIE can do?”

The release calls it “a gorgeous story celebrating YOU being perfect…just the way you are!” and promises “beautiful puppets, catchy tunes and an uplifting tale of self-acceptance for all the family.”

The production photographs on the theatre’s listing show the cast playing the music themselves, on guitar, accordion and flute, and working the yak puppets in front of a set of snowy mountains.

A first trip to the theatre

At around 45 minutes, the show is pitched at the youngest theatregoers. The release says the production “is particularly suited to children aged 3+” and “makes for an ideal first theatre experience for younger children.”

The Worthing date is one stop on a UK tour, which has already played Harrow Arts Centre and The Radlett Centre this autumn.

Making a day of it

The same Saturday is the opening day of the Worthing ice rink in Steyne Gardens, a few minutes’ walk from Union Place. For the rest of the month’s family listings, see What’s On in Worthing; the Connaught’s sister venue, the Pavilion Theatre, has its Puss in Boots pantomime from 3 December.
